one of the things hotd does better than thrones is the variety of costumes! michele ctapton was know for finding a silhouette for a character, doing their costumes in that exact style for 2-3 seasons then finding another one and doing it all over again and again. so you end up with costumes that look interchangeable. compare rhaenyra's season 2 costumes to dany's season 7&8 costumes, they're done in the same style with the accentuated shoulders, black and red color scheme and dragon imagery but rhaenyra doesn't look like she's wearing the same costume for 8 episodes. she actually has different clothes for different occasions.
YES exactly. This is an issue with Margaery too - she wears basically the same dress like 70% of the time which is riduclous because Margaery is definitely a woman who understands the importance of fashion and politics. There's a few dresses that really fit her - her Sparrow outfit even though I HATE that ugly ass wig, I think really fits that arc and what Margaery is trying to do, I kind of loved that she started wearing less of that deep v cut vest/skirt number and more of a traditional golden longleeved dress after she married Tommen (i know they fuck this up but I think her trying to dress like his mother because she doesn't need to seduce him was smart) - but most of the time she's wearing that same cut (you know what I'm talking about) and it gets very old. And then Sansa in later seasons is always wearing that wonky ugly ass armored top/tulle ass looking skirt do. this is why i say Michelle Clapton is my fuckin ENEMY she is just SUCH a lazy bones costumer whereas Jany Temime (an underrated QUEEN she is MILES BETTER than Michelle and I HATE the amount of people who say Michelle is better JUSTICE FOR JANY) and Caroline McCall are just so much better and put so much more thought into their designs.

What a Furry Ride

Chapter 13 Set in Episode 9 (last chapter in this episode)
Authors Note(PLEASE READ): Hi everyone! I know it’s been a really long 9 months hiatus...*nervous laughter* I’ve written this chapter about 8 times over, finishing it, hating it, getting distracted from the plot entirely, then forgetting all about the fic for a while- IT’S BEEN CRAZY. But, I’ve finally finished it. It’s not very long, but it’s right along with the plot and I am finally happy with it. I’ve spent 9 months HATING it! I refuse to post something I am not happy with because that just doesn’t make sense to me at all. I hope you guys enjoy it. I can’t wait to start writing chapter 14 which will start in episode 10! We’re getting closer to the finale! I love y’all so much. Thanks for sticking with me this long! MWAH 💖
Warnings: Nothing I can really think of...
~~~~
Derek stands on the front porch of what used to be his home. He leans against the post, listening to Dani’s heartbeat pounding from down in the basement she’s trapped inside. He hates that she’s caught in the middle of all this. He couldn’t help but think that if he had just stayed away, she wouldn’t be in this mess. She could be sitting in the bleachers with her family right now, living a happier, normal life, not knowing him at all.
Derek remembers the moment when he first saw Dani. It was the night of Scott’s first full moon, at the party Lydia Martin hosted. Half the school was there that night. Derek was there to keep an eye on Scott, but this overwhelming sweet scent invaded his senses, distorting his focus. He curses under his breath as he brings his fist to his nose and that’s when he saw her, the source of the sweet aroma. Perched on top of a table by the pool, her legs crossed, and her posture relaxed, leaning back on her left hand that was planted on the table and a drink in her right hand. The light reflecting from the pool danced across her face and her body giving her this soft glow. Derek’s stomach twists into a pretzel, enthralled by the young woman sitting on top of that table, her sweet scent sinking into him.
Derek remembers the last time he saw Dani. Peter was pushing her into the back seat of his nurse’s car. He remembers how deafeningly silent that drive was. How the scent of her fear and anxiety filled the cabin of the small vehicle. The guilt twisting in his stomach was almost unbearable. Derek quietly reached back, between the door and the seat, brushing his fingers against her calf. He felt her silently grip his hand with both of her own. He immediately noticed how badly she was trembling. He brushed his thumb back and forth against her trembling fingers, trying desperately to give her some form of comfort before they reached their destination.
Derek returns to the present, staring out into the trees surrounding the house with a vacant expression. Derek inhales deeply, trying to push down every emotion and every feeling he has. He’s done it before and he can do it well, but it’s always hard on him. If he’s going to do this, if Dani is going to survive, if Scott and Stiles are going to pull through, he must be self-controlled. All their lives depend on it, but his own life isn’t his priority. Not when it means keeping them safe.
Peter steps out onto the porch, inhaling the chilly, February night air. It was as if the world and everything in it was right as rain to him. It made Derek sick. “I think it’s time to pay Scott a visit,” Peter says, wearing a soft smile.
~~🌻~~
Back at Beacon Hills high school, the energy is high and almost electric. The bleachers are jam packed with screaming and cheering family members and friends. The Cyclones are all jumping, whooping, hollering, congratulating one another and shouting, “State!” over and over again. They won the game. Beacon Hill’s high school’s very own lacrosse team is going to the state championships.
Scott pulls his helmet on and frantically looks around for his best friend he hasn’t seen the entire night. “Stiles!” He calls. The Cyclones come barreling off the field and into the locker room, cheering and shouting. Scott pushes his way through his teammates calling for Stiles. “Stiles. Stiles! Has anybody seen Stiles?” Scott whirls around, finding himself standing face to face with his ex-girlfriend. Scott’s mouth falls open slightly, his stomach twisting into an even tighter knot at the sight of her adorable, nervous smile.
“Uh- you were pretty awesome out there,” Allison says, nodding with a sweet smile.
“Thanks, you too,” Scott answers, immediately wanting to punch himself in the face. “I mean, that’s not what I meant-”
“No, no, I- um, did some pretty awesome cheering.” Allison smiles at Scott again. “You can thank me.”
“You did?”
“Totally. I went from, ‘Go, team, go,’ to ‘Defense, defense,’ without a breath.” Allison nods affirming what she said. “I brought my A game.”
One of Scott’s teammates interrupts them, excitedly stepping between them shouting, “State, state, state, state, state, state…” He fades off registering the look on Scott’s face that just said, ‘Drop dead, moron,’ and quickly scurries away cheering with his more enthusiastic teammates. Scott shakes his head and looks forward, finding Allison no longer where she was just a moment ago. He frowns, looking over to the doors, seeing Mr. Argent guiding his daughter back outside.
“Isn’t that just heartbreaking,” Jackson laughs mockingly, walking up to Scott. “Gosh, I bet it causes a lot of sleepless nights.” Jackson continues, “You know what though, McCall? I actually sympathize, which is why I want to make this mutually beneficial. You give me what I want, and I’ll help you get her back.”
“What?” Scott asks in disbelief.
“Well, three days makes it just in time for the Winter Formal. Uh, think about you taking her instead of me. And also think about all the things you’re able to do to get her out of some tight little dress by the end of the night. See how this could work out for everybody?”
Scott glares at Jackson as he continues.
“Three days, McCall.” Jackson whispers, patting Scott’s cheek. “Have fun,” He finishes, disappearing into the locker room.
~~🌻~~
Mr. Argent guides Allison back to the busy bleachers, his mind somewhere else entirely. He barely remembers the game even though he sat through the entire thing. He barely remembers the drive down to the school from his house if he’s honest with himself. His mind has been preoccupied on and off throughout the day about the same thing. He’s worried about Dani.
He worries about her in general with her becoming friends with Derek Hale and encountering the alpha at the school and so on. She’s caught up in a very dangerous game whether she knows it or not and he doesn’t like it. But ever since this afternoon when they talked in the backseat of his car, he’s become even more worried for her. She’s been through a lot and he hates that someone else has walked out on her now.
He cares about Dani. She’s like an older sister to Allison. He catches himself treating her like his own daughter from time to time. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. She’s important to Allison therefore she is important to him and he’s become rather fond of her. She’s been through a lot and he hopes that she knows his home is a safe place for her.
“Dad!”
Chris is jolted from his thoughts by the sharp call for him by his daughter.
“You didn’t hear anything I just said, did you?” Allison asks.
“No, I’m sorry,” He admits with a sigh.
“You’ve been quiet all night. Is everything okay?”
“I’m fine, sweetheart. Here-” Chris digs the car keys out of his pocket and hands them to Allison. “How about you go start the car and get it warmed up.”
“Sure, okay.”
Chris smiles at his daughter as she heads off to the parking lot. He turns his attention to the busy bleachers, scanning all the enthusiastic faces for Dani. She’s come to every lacrosse game that he could tell, so she should be here. He just wants to check on her to see how she’s doing after this afternoon.
Chris spots Dani’s mother and makes his way through the crowd.
“Hello Ms. McCall,” He greets as he reaches her, noticing the various family members taking up most of an entire section of bleachers.
“Mr. Argent, hi.” Melissa stands to greet him properly. “Oh, this is my sister Maria.” Melissa gestures to the woman standing next to her. “Maria this is Christopher Argent, Allison’s father.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Maria,” Chris says with a smile, shaking Maria’s hand.
“It’s nice to meet you too,” Maria replies, returning his smile.
“Is your daughter with you? I was hoping I could talk to her.” Chris asks, turning to Melissa.
“You’re looking for her too?”
Chris frowns. “She’s not here?”
“We don’t know,” Maria says letting out a sigh.
“She’s going to be in serious trouble when I find her,” Melissa says. “I told her to be here.”
Chris lets out a sigh as well, pressing his lips into a thin line. “Probably somewhere with Derek Hale. Never mind that the police are after him.”
“Wait, Dani is hanging out with Derek Hale?” Melissa asks.
“You didn’t know they were friends…” Chris says carefully.
“No, I had no idea she was hanging around him again,” Melissa says. “I didn’t even know he was in town again until I saw his name plastered all over the news.”
“I thought it was mostly his sister she used to hang out with,” Maria says.
“Wait a minute…” Chris pauses.
The sister’s share a glance before turning to Mr. Argent.
“They’ve known each other longer?”
~~🌻~~
Most of the team stayed to shower and clean up before heading out to a celebratory team dinner at Goldie’s Diner. A lot the boys were dressed and packing their bags, getting ready to leave, when Scott walks over to his rack, a towel tied around his waist. He was one of the last of his teammates to shower.
“By the way, McCall… Apology accepted,” Danny calls from the opposite set of racks.
“I didn’t apologize,” Scott frowns.
“Every time you got the ball tonight, you passed it to me,” Danny explains, grabbing a clean shirt from his bag.
“Every time I passed the ball to you, you scored,” Scott chuckles.
Danny pulls the shirt on and slings his bookbag over his shoulder. “Apology accepted,” he says.
Danny walks out, leaving Scott alone in the locker room. Scott turns back around, grabbing his deodorant canister, shaking it up. The lights suddenly cut off and Scott pauses, frowning in confusion. Scott puts his deodorant back on the shelf of his rack and looks around the room. “Danny?” he calls. Scott is met with silence as he steps around the set of racks. Danny must’ve absentmindedly cut them off on his way out by accident.
Scott walks over to the wall and flips up the two light switches. The locker room remains dark. Scott looks up at the lights, flipping the switches a few more times; his curiosity growing with the slight touch of concern crawling around his stomach. Scott’s eye catches a ball rolling across the floor from the showers and bumping into a set of lockers with a tap. His curiosity and streak of concern growing to more mild levels as he walks toward the showers. Scotts stops in front of the ball, bending to pick it up. He frowns, turning to the side and he jumps, finding Derek standing in the middle of the open showers.
“Thank God! Where the hell have you been? Do you have any idea what’s been going on?” Scott asks, walking towards Derek.
Derek silently averts his gaze from Scott to someone standing behind him. Scott frowns following his gaze and it meets a man, stepping out behind him. He looks older than Derek, mid to late thirties maybe, brown hear, leather jacket, button down shirt, and he’s holding a lacrosse stick. It’s Peter Hale.
“I really don’t get lacrosse,” Peter confesses.
Scott stares at Peter in shock realizing that he is the alpha , “It was you…”
“When I was in high school, we played basketball.” Peter continues, glancing over at Scott. “Now there’s a real sport.”
Scott, terribly in shock, looks back at Derek for some kind of explanation as Peter continues.
“Still, I read somewhere that lacrosse comes from Native American tribes and that they played it to resolve conflict.” Peter raises the lacrosse stick, setting the bar of it on his shoulder, glancing off to the side in thought. “Do I have that right?” He whispers to himself, shaking off the thought. He lowers the stick, spinning it in his hands as he observes the net for a moment before setting the stick to the side, focusing on Scott again.
“I have a little conflict of my own to resolve, Scott. But I need your help to do it.”
“I’m not helping you kill people.” Scott says in an even, firm tone.
Peter frowns, “Well I don’t want to kill all of them. Just the responsible ones. And I that doesn’t have to include…” Peter trails off, trying to remember the name. He looks to Derek.
“Allison,” Derek finishes for him.
Scott slowly turns to face Derek. “You’re on his side?” He asks.
Derek breaks Scott’s gaze, his expression stony and vacant as he silently reminds himself that Daniella’s life is on the line if he doesn’t play his part just right.
“Are you forgetting the part where he killed your sister?” Scott adds.
“It was a mistake,” Derek responds coolly.
“What?!” Scott stares at Derek like he’s out of his mind.
“It happens.”
“Scott…” Peter starts, grabbing the teenager’s attention. “I think you’re getting the wrong impression of us. We really just want to help you reach your full potential.”
“By killing my friends,” Scott says, reading between the lines.
“Sometimes the people closest to you… can be the ones holding you back the most.”
“If they’re holding me back from becoming a psychotic nut job like you… I’m okay with that.”
Peter begins to step closer to Scott. Becoming nervous, Scott shifts on his feet, looking back at Derek for any shred or assurance.
“Maybe you could try and see things…” Peter trails off, holding up his right hand, his claws coming out. “From my perspective,” Peter finishes.
~~🌻~~
Stiles wakes up on a cold hard tile floor, his head throbbing. He groans bringing his hands to his face as he becomes more and more conscious. He sits up with a groan, squinting at his dim surroundings, quickly remember that he’s in the hospital morgue.
“Right…”
Stiles grips the overturned metal examination table lying next to him and pushes himself to his feet. The last thing he remembers is sitting on top of the metal table pushed against the door watching Peter Hale rush he door. Next thing he remembers is waking up just a few moments ago.
“Alpha…Dani and Derek…no, no, no-”
Stiles turns to where he last saw Derek and Dani sitting in the floor against the opposite wall. They’re gone. Did the Alpha take them? What happened here? Stiles swallows the lump forming in his throat. He has to get out of the hospital. He has to find Scott.
“The game.”
~~🌻~~
Stiles tares into the school parking lot, tires screeching as he turns into an empty parking spot. He jumps out of the Jeep and runs as fast as he can to the back entrance of the locker rooms. Stiles yanks the doors open rushing down the hallway and turning into the locker rooms, finding Scott in a towel, sitting on a bench with his elbows resting on his knees.
“Dude, we got a huge problem!” He breathes out, winded from all his running.
“You have no idea…” Scott replies with a far off look in his eyes.
Stiles puts his hands on his head struggling to catch his breath. “Something tells me you already know.”
“That Peter Hale is the alpha and Derek is on his side now? Yeah! I figured it out already!”
“Derek’s what?”
“He’s taken the alpha’s side, Stiles! We’re screwed!”
Scott drops his head into his hands. He can’t handle anything else right now. The alpha has been revealed, Derek’s switched sides, Jackson’s breathing down his neck about the bite, there is no way this situation could get worse.
“Scott…” Stiles trails off, dropping his hands to his hips.
Scott lifts his head. “What?”
Stiles shifts his weight from foot to foot. There’s no easy way to tell him this. It’s going to crush him. Hell, the thought is crushing him too. The idea of that psychotic bastard having Dani makes his curl up inside a whole and pretend the world doesn’t exist. Dani is like an older sister to Stiles. He can’t handle the thought of her getting hurt. She means too much to him. She’s his family. Maybe that’s why Derek chose the alpha’s side. Maybe it wasn’t up to him. Maybe, just maybe, he’s trying to protect Dani and the only way to do that is to do whatever the alpha wants. Stiles lets out a sigh rubbing his face.
“Stiles, what is it?”
Stiles looks at his best friend with such a defeated look in his eyes. “I-” Stiles presses his lips together shaking his head. He’s not going to make it through this.
Scott stands up, walking over to Stiles with a worried frown. “What’s wrong?”
Stiles glances at him, tears forming in his eyes.
“It’s bad isn’t it?” Scott asks, his own voice starting to waver in reaction to Stiles’ broken fear radiating off of him.
“Scott, he has Dani.”
Scott’s heart almost stops. “What?”
“The alpha, he has your sister.”
Scott holds Stiles’ defeated gaze, tears forming in his own eyes, mirroring Stiles.
“No…”
Dani considers herself a pretty strong person. She’s been through a lot and she’s never let anything break her. Her father, her past riddled with drugs and bad choices, she’s made it out in one piece. Bruised and battered for sure, but whole, nonetheless. She knows that she’ll never be free of obstacles, that there will always be something in her way, dragging her through the mud. But that’s all part of it, isn’t it? To get through to the other side stronger than where you started out?
I was wondering if you knew any fics with Scott being a good friend? I feel like people villainise Scott too much, and that they ignore that fact that they've been friends for literally nearly two decades. I don't really mind the ship, I just rally want a Good Friend Scott McCall fic for once.
Hi @woopy-doopey! @kevaaronday made this fic and said "Ngl i do love a good bad friend scott fic, but good friend scott always hits the spot!"
You Can Stay As Long As You Want by jacyevans (5/5 | 26,116 | Teen | Sterek) When Derek arrives upstairs, Erica takes one look at him, rolls her eyes, and takes the bags of groceries from his hands.
“So I see Mr. 5B has arrived,” she says, leaning against the counter, shoulders shaking with laughter.
Derek hates his pack.
Stiles and Scott are the new tenants in Derek's apartment building. While Derek and Stiles attempt to ignore their burgeoning interest in each other, their respective packs make sure nothing will keep the two idiots from falling in love - except maybe the faulty elevator.
Then There Was You by WaitASecondWhat (4/4 | 16,913 | Mature | Sterek) Stiles Stilinski was Scott's best friend and no one could say anything different. They had been friends since they were babies. Unfortunately Stiles had to move to New York when he was 11 to see if a special doctor could help his mother, Claudia. They couldn’t and she died that year. Stiles' dad didn’t expect her to pass so quickly and had already secured a job so they stayed. It had been 6 years but they were still as close as ever. Except Stiles didn’t know about the whole supernatural thing.
Then Stiles comes back and happiness, crushing on Derek and angst ensue.
the banana bread incident by Thealmostrhetoricalquestion (1/1 | 10,287 | Teen | Sterek) "Is this a plastic spoon?" Stiles demands in disgust. "You do realise that there's actual cutlery in the kitchen, right? I'm surrounded by morons who don't know how to use a kitchen."
“I know how to use a kitchen,” Derek protests lazily. “It’s just that all the other spoons were dirty.”
“There’s this revolutionary new invention,” Stiles says, widening his eyes in mock-amazement. “It’s called a sink.”
In which there are tiny pink shorts, a kissing gate, a cat called Pumpkin and a plethora of awkward moments.
Scott McCall’s I Saw It First by WhereDestiniesMeet17 (1/1 | 5,875 | Teen | Steter) It's as he's drifting off to sleep that he has revelation number three. They have no fucking idea. Not a clue that they are in love, much less with each other. Scott laughs so hard that he wakes not only himself, but half the pack.
-
Or the one where Scott figures out that Stiles and Peter are in love way before they do. Meanwhile, they have monsters to take care of.
Diary Of An Overworked Nurse by RoryMarx (1/1 | 4,636 | Gen) If you have it… we’ll do something,” Scott suddenly said, and then they were hugging.
Crystal looked at them, could feel the other adults do the same, and the only word she could describe the hug with was desperate. Scott and Stiles clung to each other like two people afraid to drown. It was heartbreaking. These teenagers loved each other. No matter what the MRI showed today, Crystal knew Stiles wouldn’t just have his dad to count on – he would also have Scott.
OR: Over the years the nurses and doctors of Beacon Hills Memorials watched Stiles and Scott grow up - they saw a lot of tears, hugs, laughter, and grief.
5 Times Scott and Stiles Celebrated Their Humanity + 1 Time There Were Werewolves
Hold the Sugar; You’re Sweet Enough by Dani Mahealani (1/1 | 2,846 | Gen | Sterek) Stiles loves his friends, he really does. But as he’s making Derek’s latte, he catches what Scott’s written on Derek’s cup and groans.
“What are you, twelve? You know Derek already has my number. He’s had my number. We text every day,” Stiles says as he works on the latte.
Scott looks over at him from the register with the most innocent grin in the world and shrugs. “I know, but I wanted to make a statement.”
Stiles rolls his eyes and shakes his head. “You mean adding ‘+ SS’ underneath his name and drawing a heart around it wasn’t enough of a statement?”
“If you’re not going to flirt with him yourself, I’ll just flirt with him for you,” Scott says, shrugging.
or the one where their meddling friends decide it's high time for stiles and derek to get their acts together and date
Summertime Fling by TheSlyestFox (2/2 | 2,740 | Teen | Stiles/Brett) After all the supernatural drama over the last few years, Stiles is ready for a break. Summer brings the perfect opportunity for a respite when he signs up for a painting class through the local community college. He loves his pack, but a little R&R is just what he needs to reset for senior year. His plans go awry when Brett Talbot unexpectedly joins him at his table. He's annoyed at first, but Brett's flirtatious and jovial personally cuts right through his defenses.
One Day
EZ Reyes & Angel Reyes & Sister!OFC (Daniela Reyes) ft. Coco Cruz
Inspired by Day 15 of the August Prompts: bubbles
Warnings: language, family angst, alcohol
Word Count: 3.8k
A/N: I’ve had Daniela’s and Coco’s backstory planned out in my head for a while now and when I sat down to write this it made me realize that I’ve never actually had the two of them interacting in a story before. There will probably be more of that to come. Both Reyes brothers are in this but it definitely focuses more on Daniela’s relationship with EZ. I just. I love them. Enjoy the Reyes family drama!
Daniela had texted her brothers the second she went on break at the hospital. They were no strangers to baby-sitting their niece, and nothing had ever gone wrong while they were watching her. Still, Daniela couldn’t stop herself from texting to check in and make sure that everything was going alright.
She no sooner set her phone down on the table and picked up her water bottle when her phone started to vibrate in the tabletop. Flipping it over, she couldn’t help but to be a little nervous when she saw Angel's name flashing across the screen, his contact photo that was a picture of him and niece staring Daniela in the face as she hit the accept button.
“Hey, all good?” she asked immediately.
“Yea,” he chuckled, “Why you always gotta assume something’s wrong?”
She sighed, “Self-preservation. Also, in my defense, I just texted to check in and you immediately called me. Sorry if that made me a little nervous.”
“Alright, alright,” she could picture the way Angel was probably rolling his eyes at her, “I wanted to ask you somethin’, but I didn’t wanna call you while you’re working.”
“What’s up?”
He hesitated, like he already knew that the question already wasn’t going to go over well, “I was just wondering if EZ and I could bring Ana to the clubhouse today.”
Daniela let out a long, exasperated sigh, “Angel…”
“C'mon, Dani. The guys miss her. Plus Creep's kids are gonna be there for a little while so she’ll have kids to play with. It’ll get her out of the house.”
“You reading all these reasons off a list in front of you?” she joked.
He laughed, “Nah, but I’ve been brainstorming all morning.”
She took a moment to really think about her answer to the question, “Is Coco gonna be there?”
“Dani—”
“Answer the fucking question, Angel,” she wasn’t yelling, just tired of the stress of the situation.
“Yea,” he said after a beat, “he's gonna be there,” he heard her taking a deep breath, most likely gearing up to argue, so he started up again before she could, “But EZ and I are gonna be there. And the rest of the guys, like I said. C'mon, ‘mana, just for a couple hours.”
Pinching the bridge of her nose, Daniela mulled it over. She knew that realistically there was only so long she could go handling things the way that she had been. Maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, even if she didn’t want to admit that to herself.
“Fine,” she huffed, “But I’m picking her up from the clubhouse. And if I hear any sort of sideways shit—”
Angel didn’t let her finish the sentence, “You got it. Thank you, Dani. Seriously,” it was the most earnest he’d sounded with her in a long time.
“Love you,” she meant it, despite the exhaustion in her voice.
“Love you too.”
When she hung up the phone with Angel, she immediately sent another text, this one just to EZ outside of their sibling group chat, “keep a close eye on Ana at the clubhouse today please. I don’t wanna regret saying yes to this.”
She knew that she could trust EZ with the situation in a way that she couldn’t quite trust Angel. Angel loved her, and Ana, and he would take a thousand bullets for either of them. Daniela didn’t doubt any of that. But she also knew how torn Angel had been as the entire situation between his sister and his MC brother crumbled in the worst of ways. He wasn’t going to turn his back on family, but he also couldn’t pretend that he didn’t still have his love for Coco. That was his best friend, he couldn’t just bail on him either. He never blamed Daniela for how she was handling the situation, but it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that he struggled with it a lot, being put between the two of them.
EZ didn’t share that same sense of inner turmoil. His lines in the sand were firm and impossible to miss. He didn’t have many positive feelings left for Coco, not after what the man had put his sister and his niece through. They still shared the club, and EZ was thankful that he was so good at compartmentalizing, otherwise the tension would’ve caused it all to start unraveling. Outside of Templo, or other explicit club business, the two of them didn’t talk. Coco used to try and mend that bridge, but he quickly realized how futile it was. EZ would come around when EZ was ready to, if he was ever ready to.
Daniela knew all of that. Which was why she knew that if anything happened that was even borderline not okay, EZ would step in to stop it, or at the very least tell her about it when she came to pick Ana up.
“I got you. Love you"
She sighed in relief at his text, sending back a quick, “love you too" before finally allowing herself to take a bite of her lunch.
When her shift was over, the drive from the hospital to the clubhouse felt like it took way longer than it used to. Maybe this time it was because deep down she was dreading it. The only times she’d set foot on club turf over the last year or so was when someone needed to get patched up, and even then she was in and out as quickly as possible. It wasn’t a social place for her anymore.
She rolled into the lot and parked her car, taking a deep breath as she fought the urge to rest her head against the steering wheel. It couldn’t be that bad, she reassured herself, there was no way it was going to be as bad as some of the scenarios that her brain was conjuring up. She took a moment to redo her ponytail, and it hit her that maybe she should’ve changed out of her scrubs before driving over, but it was too late now. Grabbing her phone and taking her keys out of the ignition, she opened the door and stepped out of the car.
Small puffs of dust kicked up around her sneakers when they hit the ground. She wondered how many deep breaths it would take to get herself to actually calm down. Looking around, she noticed how quiet the yard seemed, which wasn’t at all what she remembered it being like. She wondered if some of the guys were out of town.
When she got a little closer to the clubhouse, that’s when she started to hear the laughter and the conversations. She could pick Ana’s laugh out of a crowd with no effort at all, and the sound brought her a small sense of peace. If nothing else, her little girl was at least having a good time. She glanced up at the deck, trying to get a good look at everyone who was there. She spotted Ana immediately as she ran up and down the length of the deck, along with Angel and EZ. Bishop was there too, and Gilly. Her steps faltered slightly when her eyes landed on Coco, who hadn’t seen her yet. The few seconds between her noticing him and him noticing her were going to be some of the longest seconds of her life.
Ana skidded to a stop when she saw Daniela walking over, her already bright smile growing even brighter, “Mommy!” she took off down the steps and ran to her mother.
Daniela laughed, feeling a little more at-ease as she crouched down to catch the running hug her daughter was bringing her way, scooping her up and swinging her around before settling the little girl on her hip. Daniela kissed the side of her head, “Hey, chiquita!” she kissed her again, “You have a good day with your tíos?”
“Yea!” she squirmed in her mother’s arms for a moment before hopping back down to the ground, doing her best to take Daniela’s hand in her won and pulling her back towards the step, “Tío EZ got a bubble gun!”
Daniela laughed as the two of them walked up the steps together, “Oh, did he?” she looked over at her brother, “Something tells me he might’ve already had that on-hand.”
EZ chuckled, smiling as he shook his head, “Nah, but I wasn’t going to say no to a reason to go and grab one,” he stepped in to hug her, “Hey, Dani.”
She hugged him tightly with the arm that her daughter wasn’t pulling on, “Thank you, Ezekiel,” her voice was soft enough that no one else could hear it.
She greeted Angel too, or she tried to as best she could between Ana’s excited rambles about everything that they had been up to that day. She talked about the kids who had been there earlier, how much fun they’d had running around playing tag and catch. She talked about how Chucky had made cookies to share with everyone, that she even got to have one before lunch. She casually peppered in, “Daddy let me sit on his motorcycle!” before diverting right off to the next point, already shifting her excitement to the aforementioned bubble gun that EZ had gotten.
She fought to tune into the rest of the things that Ana was saying as her own thoughts began to spin out. Turning, she looked back over her shoulder to see Coco standing there watching the two of them talk and interact. She could see all of the different emotions that were swirling around in his mind. The two of them hadn’t said a single word to each other but Daniela still felt herself getting choked up.
EZ clocked the entire thing. And, as much as he didn’t really want to leave his sister and Coco by themselves, he knew that their first real conversation in well over a year probably shouldn’t take place within earshot of their daughter. So, in an attempt to distract Ana, he crouched down, loudly whispering to her that the two of them should try to run down Angel and get him with the bubble gun. It was an idea that she little girl was all too excited to take EZ up on. She managed to get out an, “I’ll be right back,” between giggles as she let go of Daniela’s hand and ran with EZ after her other uncle. Daniela watched them for a moment, a soft smile on her face before she returned her attention to the other matters at hand.
Taking in a deep breath to try and give herself an extra boost of confidence, she crossed the deck so that she was standing in front of Coco. He could see the conflicting emotions on her face and it broke his heart. It’d been so long and yet here they still were, still struggling to figure it all out. Daniela wanted to be the first one to say something, but she couldn’t force the words out.
“Thanks,” Coco nervously fussed with the pack of cigarettes in his hand, “’Preciate you lettin’ Angel bring her over.”
She nodded, “Yea. N-no problem.”
He wanted to make a joke about how he knew it was probably a little bit of a problem, but he knew it wouldn’t land. They weren’t there yet—they probably wouldn’t be there for a really long time. So, instead, he kept his mouth shut.
Daniela had to admit that he looked like a completely different man from the last time that she’d seen him. It had been a long time, and despite her anger and her hurt she did truly always hope that Coco was getting his act together. She just couldn’t afford to keep herself and her daughter around him while he did. But he looked good. Nervous, because of the specific circumstances of the day, but he looked healthy. It brought her some relief, even if it didn’t wipe away the years of damage done.
“She looks like you,” Coco commented as he nodded towards Ana, “Thankfully,” he added with a laugh.
It got Daniela to chuckle a little bit too. She shrugged, “Yea. Sometimes she makes faces that are very much you, though,” she raked her fingers along her scalp, “I know I’m gonna be in for it when she’s older.”
Coco watched her watch their daughter, and he wished that he knew what to say to her. He wished he knew how the conversations were supposed to go now. He knew that they couldn’t just start over, but he didn’t want to dig into everything else on the front steps of the fucking clubhouse, either.
“You look good, Dani,” he said.
She looked back over at him, a weak smile on her face, “Thank you, Coco. You too,” she motioned towards his hair, “The braids look good,” she sucked in a breath before leaning back against the railing, crossing her arms over her chest as she continued to look at him, “Today was okay?”
There was only one right answer to the question. But Coco knew that he wasn’t the only person that she was going to be asking about it. And he couldn’t blame her at all, even if he wanted to. He nodded, finally stuffing his cigarettes back into the pocket of his kutte, “It was good. She’s,” his lips twitched into a smile, “she’s a funny fuckin’ kid, you know?”
She had a soft smile on her face, “I do.”
Even though the two of them were running around with Ana to keep her busy any away from the conversation unfolding between her parents, both Angel and EZ were trying their best to sneak looks over at them to get a feel for how the conversation was going. There were none of the usual tell-tale signs of Daniela’s anger. There was no yelling from either of them, no angry gesturing. Angel hoped that that was a good sign.
He saw EZ watching the same way he was. He shrugged, “Looks alright.”
EZ didn’t look quite as convinced, “We’ll see,” he looked back at Angel and saw the way he wanted to argue, “Quiet doesn’t always mean good.”
Angel sucked his teeth, “C’mon, why you always gotta,” he gestured vaguely at nothing, “What if it’s a good thing?”
EZ rolled his eyes before blasting a slew of bubbles at his brother, causing Ana to break out into laughter, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Coco caught the fact that both of Daniela’s brothers were watching them intently. He also knew that they were watching for very different reasons, “I gotta,” he nodded towards the area where the bikes were parked, “I gotta run. But thank you. Seriously. I know it’s not…you know.”
Daniela nodded, knowing all too well, “You’re welcome. Stay well, Coco, okay?”
He was surprised at how genuine she sounded. He had been ready for more anger, more venom, which again he wouldn’t have blamed her for, “Okay.”
He walked away, leaving her leaning against the railing as he made his way towards the stairs. She turned so that her arms were folded and braced on the top of the rail, watching as Coco went over to Ana to hug and kiss her goodbye. It looked so natural, Daniela though, even in spite of everything. But one afternoon going well didn’t mean that everything was alright. Still, there was an ache in her chest at the sight of her daughter excitedly waving to her father as he strode over towards his bike.
Once he was gone, the two girls didn’t linger too much longer. Daniela gathered up her daughter’s things and brought them to the car while she finished playing with her tíos. The sounds of the three of them laughing eased the knot that was in her gut after seeing Coco for the first time in so long.
EZ was buckling Ana into the car as Angel walked over to say goodbye to his sister. He pulled her into a hug, “You good?”
She sighed, not wanting to lie but not wanting to get into it all with him when she was so close to finally being able to go home, “I’ll be fine, Angel.”
He stepped back, “It meant a lot to him, you know.”
A sarcastic comment was on the tip of her tongue but she managed to stop it just in time. Instead, she side-stepped his comment completely, “Get home safe, alright? Love you.”
He couldn’t stop the frown on his face, but he still returned the sentiment, “Love you too.”
Angel said goodbye to his niece and made his way back towards the clubhouse while Daniela waited for EZ to finish saying goodbye to her. She smiled at the sight of the two of them interacting, always laughing together.
He kissed Ana on the forehead, “Be good, alright?” he ruffled her hair, “Love you.”
She giggled, “Love you!”
EZ carefully shut the car door before heading over to his sister. He could see the exhaustion on her face, and he knew that it wasn’t just from a long day at work. He knew better than to ask, because it wasn’t like she was going to get into any of it with him in that moment.
“I love you,” he ran his hand up and down her back.
She gave him a squeeze before pulling away, “I love you too.”
It was fairly late when Daniela heard the knock at her door. She put Ana to bed a few hours before, the little girl falling asleep almost instantly when her head hit the pillow. It’d been a long, exciting day for her. Daniela was happy for her, but she was also exhausted by everything it had dredged up.
She was expecting the worst when she walked over to see who was standing outside her front door. She was relieved to see that it was EZ, though. Unlocking and pulling the door open, she did her best to give a smile, “Hey, you good?”
He nodded, his smile coming to him a little more easily, “Yea. Just,” he held up the bubble gun, “Ana forgot her weapon of mass destruction at the clubhouse.”
Daniela chuckled softly, shaking her head as she pulled the door open a little more and motioned for her brother to come inside, “Figured you kept it on purpose.”
He laughed, setting it down on the table as they walked into the kitchen, “I can’t be trusted with that kind of firepower.”
“Hm,” Daniela hummed in amusement as she grabbed them both beers from the fridge, “That’s true,” she sat down at the table, motioning for EZ to do the same once she handed him his beer, “What’s on your mind, Ezekiel?”
He shook his head before lifting the bottle to his lips, “Just wanted to check in on you. Today wasn’t exactly what you had planned.”
Her laugh was hollow, “No,” she took a long drink out of the beer bottle, “it wasn’t. He was…he was okay, though? With her?”
He nodded, not hesitating because there was nothing to hesitate about, “He was good, yea. He missed her.” EZ saw that Daniela was biting back a comment, “What?”
Glancing over at him, she remembered who it was that she was talking to. She didn’t have to pretend, “He fucking should.”
“I know,” EZ nodded.
“I’m not,” she took an unsteady breath as she toyed with the bottle in her hands, “I’m not ready for that to become a regular thing, EZ. I saw him for about five fucking minutes and I’m so tired.”
His expression hardened, “What’d he say?”
She shook her head, “Nothing, that’s just it. He was perfectly,” she took another swig of her beer, “perfectly fucking cordial. And I don’t, I don’t mean to sound like a horrible person. I’m glad he’s doing better. I am, really. But all of the, all of the damage? It’s hard to look at him and not see that.”
“I get it.”
She looked down at the bottle, “Ana loves him.”
“She does.”
Tears started welling up in Daniela’s eyes after an entire afternoon and evening of trying to keep her emotions pushed down. She leaned back in her chair, letting her head drop back for a moment as the tears spilled over onto her cheeks. She quickly wiped them away before looking back at her brother.
“I don’t want her to go her whole life without him. I don’t. But just, fuck, how am I supposed to know when he’s ready? How do I know he’s not going to do the same thing he did last time? I can’t go through that again. I sure as hell can’t put her through that now that she’s old enough to really see what’s going on. How do I…” her voice trailed off.
“You’ll feel it,” EZ nodded, “You knew when it was time to go. You’ll know when it’s time to let him come back.”
She let out a dry chuckle, “I waited too long to leave.”
“But you did. You’ll know when it’s right,” he brought the bottle to his lips.
“But Coco—”
“Fuck ‘em,” EZ’s voice was quiet, but firm. He saw the look on his sister’s face, “I’m serious, Dani. This is about Ana. If you don’t think he’s ready to show up for her, then fuck ‘em. He cost himself this.”
It was more nuanced than that, but also, it really wasn’t. She knew that EZ was right, that at the end of the day it was about what was best for Ana. Everything would’ve been different if Daniela only had to think about herself. She could put up with a lot, put a lot of work and struggle into something, but she couldn’t ask the same of her daughter.
“Thank you, EZ,” she said with a nod.
“You need anything?”
She chuckled, “You got a time machine?”
“I’m working on it,” he joked before finishing off his beer and standing up out of his seat, “I just wanted to stop and check in on you. Go get some sleep—you look like shit,” he chuckled.
Daniela laughed as she stood up, walking over and hugging him, “You’re lucky that gun isn’t loaded,” she leaned against him for a moment, “Drive safe.”
“Always,” he started making his way back towards the door, “Call me if you need anything.”
“Will do,” she sighed, running her fingers through her hair, “Lock the door behind you, yea?”
“Got it.”
She lingered in the kitchen, listening for the sound of EZ’s pickup truck starting and driving away. Once it was silent again, she tossed their beer bottles into the recycling bin. Grabbing the plastic toy off the table, she quietly made her way upstairs towards Ana’s room. She quietly walked inside, placing the toy on top of her daughter’s dresser.
On her way back out, she lingered in the doorway for a moment, taking in the peaceful look on Ana’s face as she slept. One arm was hanging over the edge of the bed, her fingertips nearly brushing along the floor. Daniela smiled despite the weight in her chest, taking a breath before stepping out completely and pulling the door shut.
We have four books on our radar this week. Which of them are on your TBR list?
Echoes of Grace by Guadalupe Garcia McCall Tu Books
A tragic accident in the young lives of sisters, Graciela (Grace) and Mercedes (Mercy) Torres, sets off a chain of events in which Grace flounders to restore her relationship with her sister while swimming against a current of strange, bewildering echoes.
Flashbacks, premonitions, and visitations from the other side all weave a mysterious tapestry that weighs heavily on Grace’s shoulders as she tries to navigate memories of a time three years earlier when she ran away from home and lost a week of her life.
In the present—amidst the mundanities of college homework and dating—Grace tries to figure out if the things happening in her world are memories or premonitions, warnings of things yet to unfold. As she recovers time lost, Grace comes closer to reconciling with Mercy, even as she remembers, bit by bit, the horrible thing that happened to her when she spent a week with her maternal grandmother in Mexico—a grandmother she had been told was long gone.
The things her regained memory reveals shed light on old family secrets. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
The fates tell of a truly dangerous journey, one that could end in more heartache, more death. Bolstered by the sisterhood of ancient magic, can Briseis harness her power to save the people she loves most?
The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi Del Rey Books
Red is the blood of the elite, of magic, of control. Blue is the blood of the poor, of workers, of the resistance. Clear is the blood of the slaves, of the crushed, of the invisible.
Sylah dreams of days growing up in the resistance, being told she would spark a revolution that would free the empire from the red-blooded ruling classes’ tyranny. That spark was extinguished the day she watched her family murdered before her eyes.
Anoor has been told she’s nothing, no one, a disappointment, by the only person who matters: her mother, the most powerful ruler in the empire. But when Sylah and Anoor meet, a fire burns between them that could consume the kingdom—and their hearts.
Hassa moves through the world unseen by upper classes, so she knows what it means to be invisible. But invisibility has its uses: It can hide the most dangerous of secrets, secrets that can reignite a revolution. And when she joins forces with Sylah and Anoor, together these grains of sand will become a storm.
As the empire begins a set of trials of combat and skill designed to find its new leaders, the stage is set for blood to flow, power to shift, and cities to burn.
title: i got a lot of trust (and no one to give it to) penname: civillove ship: malcolm bright / dani powell rating: PG-13 (descriptions of crime scenes) summary: a case of the week that involves an apartment murder and the constant struggle of dani wanting to trust malcolm, even when he’s keeping something from her notes: beginning of season 2 vibes but nothing too spoilery. thanks especially to the anon that missed my brightwell. i missed writing them too :3 enjoy!
Dani really wishes she could say she wasn’t starting off her day with something other than murder. When she allows herself to think about her work, like really think about it—she goes to bed thinking about the terrible things human beings can do to one another. And when she wakes up? That notion is still true.
She hasn’t given a lot of time and effort towards what her future might look like, getting a boyfriend or contemplating a husband, kids. But a part of her wonders—how is she supposed to bring anyone up in a world like this? While there are obviously some definite good things, it never seems to balance out with the other side, the darkness that lurks around many street corners and people’s intentions.
Read more here.
